The number for peanut or any type of nut allergy reaction is slowly on the rise. Nut allergy is the most common type of food allergy in both children and adults. A severe reaction to nut can be life threatening if you fail to take precautions. Typically, these allergies are caused by the immune system reacting to certain protein found in nuts. The allergen found can cause the immune system to release a chemical called histamine to fight off the threat. Mild symptoms of the allergy include rashes, hives, redness to the skin, coughing, itchy watery eyes, and more. More severe symptoms of nut allergies include shortness of breath and anaphylaxis, which is the inability to breath due to the swelling of the throat. The steps below are treatments and precautions for nut allergies recommended by our very own primary care physicians.

Prevent any sorts of allergic reaction by staying aware and avoiding any food products that may contain nuts in them. It is important to read all food labels and track your ingredients before consumption. Keep in mind when eating out that certain food such as Chinese, Thai, or other Asian cuisine often contain nuts and nut oil. It is best to inform the staff about your allergies and be educated on which food contains nuts. Reach out to your local primary care physician to learn more about dietary info.

Mild vs. Severe Reactions

Treatments for mild reaction includes taking any antihistamine medication as soon as possible. Antihistamine will block the histamine chemical that is released by your body during an allergic reaction. These medications are over the counter and can be bought at your local pharmacies. Treatments for more severe reactions will require an injection of epinephrine followed by immediate medical attention.
