Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that are acquired by sexual contact. These are caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites that are transmitted through bodily fluids that pass from person to person during sexual contact.
Causes & Symptoms
Most sexually transmitted diseases affect both men and women; if the woman is pregnant, the infection can cause complications to both the mother and the baby. Certain infections such as gonorrhea, HIV, and chlamydia can pass from mother to baby during pregnancy or at birth. So all pregnant women should pass a screening for STDs to detect any infection and apply treatment before the delivery.
Generally, STDs do not cause any noticeable symptoms. But if they do, common signs include burning or pain when urinating, abnormal discharge, fever, warts, itching, swollen glands and sores.
The best approach to preventing sexually transmitted diseases is to use condoms during sexual activity to avoid infection and help minimize risk. Regular testing and monitoring for STDs in both men and women can also prevent the spread of STDs from unknowing partners.

Common Questions About Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
Yes, the Men's Vitality Center clinics are fully equipped to test for and diagnose STDs using physical exams, blood tests and urine analysis. In the case that an STD is diagnosed, we can prescribe the appropriate medications, monitor your condition and recommend you to a specialist if needed.
With treatment, some STDs can be cured while others cannot. Syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis can be fully treated with antibiotics once they are diagnosed. Other STDs are caused by viruses and currently have no cure. These include hepatitis B, herpes simplex virus (HSV or herpes), HIV, and human papillomavirus (HPV). Symptoms from these STDs can be managed with medications and careful monitoring.
A simple blood test can check for common STDs including syphilis, gonorrhea, hepatitis, herpes and HIV. A urine test may also be performed, as well as swabs of the mouth, genitals or any discharge/sores. Can a PCP diagnose and treat an STD?
