Migraines

CONDITIONS

A migraine headache is typically a throbbing pain with a pulsating pattern that occurs on one side of the head. It is mostly accompanied by sensitivity to light and high sounds, with the possibility of nausea and vomiting as well. The migraine pain can be severe to the point that it can alter your quality of life and keep you from performing simple daily tasks. Migraines can strike multiple times in a month and may last from 4 to 72 hours in one episode.

The cause of a migraine is not fully clear, but it may be linked to genetic factors and environmental changes. Migraines can be triggered by a variety of reasons. You can experience episodes after missing sleep, drinking alcohol, or looking at a screen for too long.

Common Questions About Migraines

When should you see a doctor for migraine headaches?

If you find that your migraines are interfering with your life causing you to miss work, social events, or family activities you will want to seek medical attention from a primary care doctor. Migraines that occur frequently, about once or more per week, can have a serious impact on your quality of life. A doctor can help you identify the cause of your migraines and develop a treatment plan for you to minimize and manage them.

What are the symptoms of migraine headache?

The first signs of a migraine headache may develop a day or two before the actual migraine sets in. These symptoms can include mood swings, food cravings, constipation, thirst and a need to urinate frequently. This can be followed by changes in vision, where some people may see spots of flashing lights, others may lose part of their vision. Some people experience ringing in their ears and others a tingling sensation in their lips or fingers. This is followed by a severe throbbing headache that effects one side of the head and can worsen over several hours. During this time sensitivity to light is common. Some people will experience nausea and even vomiting during their migraine. Following the migraine headache, some people can feel confused and tired as they recover from the episode.
